Case Studies—For each of the larger readings, students will be assigned character analyses. These will be approximately 1-2 pages each, analyzing that character in relation to living and working—assignments will be tailored to the specific characters. These should be treated as formal writing and should not use outside sources—just you and the text. The Awakening Discuss how life and work interact for one (and only one) of the following characters: Mademoiselle Reisz, Adèle Ratignolle, Robert Lebrun, Alcée Arobin, or Léonce Pontellier. The concept of what one’s work actually is may play a role for the women, just as it should have in Case Study 2.
