The term magnet hospital is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), and the primary role is attracting patients, nurses, and other medical staff. There are various considerations that a hospital must achieve for it to achieve magnet status, and they include the following areas. First transformational leadership, second, structural empowerment, third, exemplary professional practice, fourth, new knowledge innovations, and improvements, lastly, empirical outcomes (“What is a Magnet Hospital?”, 2020). As a nursing professional, the health care center where I am engaged has managed to incorporate some of these standards in excellence, thereby enabling the provision of high-quality services to the patients while depicting a high level of professionalism among the medical staff.

As a nursing professional, there must be a theoretical model which guides care, and one nursing theory that has been instrumental in our facility is Florence Nightingale. This theory, it proposes the utilization of the environment in aiding the patient to achieve full recovery. Some of the environmental factors proposed and which have remained essential in caring for patients include; fresh air, pure water, efficient drainage, cleanliness, sanitation, and direct sunlight.

Our facility understands that for us to provide efficient care to the patient, then it is imperative that we adopt the strategies espoused by Florence Nightingale. According to Riegel et al. (2021), it is important that the nursing professional uses her brain, heart, and hands in creating a healing environment to care for the patient’s body, mind, and spirit. Therefore, it is necessary to provide holistic care in our facility while adopting a humanistic approach since human beings have an inseparable relationship with their environment.



Our professional practice model represents our values to deliver compassionate, quality care to patients. And better health care to the community. We achieve our mission and vision by incorporating the shared governance model.

According to Kanninen et al. (2019), shared governance is a leadership style that allows nurses and other members of the health team to work together in order to achieve a better patient outcome. It was initiated during the 1980s and was shared with the Magnet Recognition Program as hospitals applying for magnet status are essential to demonstrate a shared decision-making system with participatory management. This provides an opportunity to practice their autonomy within their scope of practice. Through staff meetings, health team members have their voice to impart their knowledge, learn from other staff and support each other by discussing what needs to implement on how we better care for the patient by voicing out our concern.

Kanninen et al. (2019), mentioned that shared governance improves the quality and safety of patient care at the same time impacts the nurses in a positive way by developing their accountability and encouraging them to express their ideas. Brennan and Wendt (2021) stated that shared governance enhances the collaboration of the team where employees become more engaged. Incorporated in the model is the PDCA cycle that pertains to Plan, Do, Check, and Act which led to employment participation to improve the provision of care to the patient. Though I do not work in a Magnet Hospital, we are fortunate that we follow this step-by-step process.  During the end-of-shift report and staff meetings, we identify the problem and formulate a plan to resolve the conflict, analyzed and implement it and discuss the effectiveness as open for suggestion through an effective collaboration of the team and achieve patient satisfaction.

The outcomes of shared governance contribute not only to patient care but by increasing the morale of the staff, motivating creativity as well as escalating personal. And professional development (Bednarski, 2009).
